ELOF and SEL: Relationships

Learn how infants, toddlers, and preschoolers develop relationship-building skills with adults and peers. This course teaches easy-to-implement strategies that early childhood educators can use every day to support this development, including activities from Harmony SEL’s research-based curriculum.

In this course, you will learn how young children begin to engage with the people around them, developing trust and the ability to communicate and understand thoughts and feelings. You will also learn how you as an educator can support their development of responsive relationships and developmentally appropriate social play. You will apply this knowledge using a wealth of resources to support children and nurture the development of these vital social and emotional skills. 

This course aligns with the Early Learning Outcomes Framework (ELOF) and includes exercises from the research-based Harmony SEL curriculum so you can apply the learning. Harmony provides a variety of methods and tools that are fun, easy to use, and bring joy to your instructional practice!

Head Start Alignment: This course supports programs in meeting 1302.31 Teaching and the learning environment of the Head Start Program Performance Standards (HSPPS) in which a program must “promote healthy development and children’s skill growth aligned with the Head Start Early Learning Outcomes Framework (ELOF): Ages Birth to Five, including for children with disabilities.” It aligns with the ELOF Social and Emotional Development domain and supports goals for the following sub-domains: Relationships with Adults and Relationships with Other Children.

  5. Relationships with Peers: Preschoolers

Learning Objectives:

  • Early Learning Outcomes Framework – Have a thorough understanding of the Social and Emotional Development sub-domains: Relationships with Adults, and Relationships with Children.
  • Use new tools developed by Harmony SEL to apply your learning in the classroom and support children’s development in these sub-domains.
  • Reflect on and deepen your understanding of your own relationship-building skills.
  •  Explore how to overcome biases and challenging behaviors that may inhibit your ability to teach all children equitably.

Harmony fosters knowledge, skills, and attitudes that Pre-K-6 grade students need to develop healthy identities, create meaningful relationships, and engage productively by providing SEL learning resources, tools, and strategies.

Rachel Hutchison

Rachel Hutchison is the Manager of Online Instructional Design at the National Head Start Association (NHSA). In this role she oversees the design and management of 100+ online courses for the Academy at NHSA. In 2021, Hutchison launched NHSA in the Classroom, an initiative that aims to increase access to world-class arts and educational resources through virtual programming. Rachel earned her bachelors in writing and communication at Concordia College in Moorhead, MN and her masters in creative writing at Harvard University in Cambridge, MA. Rachel grew up in Havre, Montana and enjoys puppetry, music, and hiking.
