WASHINGTON, D.C. – On January 28, 2026, the National Head Start Association (NHSA) honored Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) with the Robert E. Cooke Lifetime Achievement Award, the highest accolade bestowed by NHSA, in recognition of his decades-long dedication to Head Start and to advancing opportunities for children and families nationwide.
The Robert E. Cooke Lifetime Achievement Award honors individuals whose careers reflect an extraordinary commitment to Head Start. Named for the visionary pediatrician who chaired the original planning committee for Head Start in 1965, the award recognizes leaders whose lifelong service has helped shape and sustain the program. A longtime Head Start advocate, Senator Durbin’s career has been marked by unwavering support for early learning, family well-being, and the comprehensive services that Head Start provides.
“Senator Durbin’s leadership embodies the very spirit of the Robert E. Cooke Award,” said NHSA Executive Director Yasmina Vinci. “As he prepares to retire at the end of this Congress, we honor a legacy defined by integrity, partnership, and an unshakable belief in the potential of every child. The Head Start community is profoundly grateful for his decades of service.”
“Senator Durbin has been one of Head Start’s most steadfast and trusted champions for generations,” said Lauri Morrison-Frichtl, executive director of the Illinois Head Start Association. “Throughout his career, he has consistently elevated the voices of families, supported the early childhood workforce, and worked to ensure Head Start remains a strong foundation for children’s success. His leadership has left an enduring impact on our community.”
Senator Durbin received the award during NHSA’s annual Head Start Breakfast on the Hill, held as part of NHSA’s 2026 Winter Leadership Institute, where Head Start parents, alumni, staff, and advocates from across the country gathered to share their stories and engage with policymakers about the importance of Head Start.
