Child Development Associate (CDA) Pathway to Purpose, a pilot program launched by The Academy at NHSA in partnership with Harmony Academy, is part of a broader initiative to create career opportunities for students interested in early childhood education. With a total of 153 high school student participants across different schools around the country, the program is designed to introduce young learners to the field, providing them with hands-on experience and the opportunity to earn a CDA credential while still in high school–and all at no cost.
Norwich Free Academy piloted Pathway to Purpose with just nine students. The program was embedded into the school day, ensuring students could dedicate focused time to their coursework. Next year, students will have a dedicated day each week to complete CDA coursework, build their portfolios, and engage in group learning activities. Norwich will expand the program to 12 students next year–with the goal of 60 participants in the near future.
“The most valuable part of my experience in CDA [Pathway to Purpose] is being able to connect what I’m learning in the program to real life,” says 11th grader Angienise Orozco-Alvarez.
This initiative benefits students, schools, and early learning centers by creating a pipeline of educators familiar with best practices in child development. As it grows, it can help address workforce shortages by equipping young professionals with the skills and credentials to enter the field confidently.
Linda Farinha, who has played a critical role in leading this initiative at Norwich Free Academy, shared her enthusiasm: “We are creating an exciting, hands-onÂ
learning experience for our students that prepares them for careers in education,” says Linda Farinha, at Norwich Free Academy. “By incorporating the CDA into their high school experience, we are giving them a strong foundation to build upon.”
Norwich Free Academy’s CDA pilot program is expanding, refining its approach, and increasing its reach. With a clear vision of strengthening the early childhood education workforce, programs like this are shaping the future of education, one student at a time.
“This program has prepared me for more than just child care, you get to work with adults, parents, and kids,” Alyssa Simonet-Selbe, another 11th-grade student, reflects on her experience. “I’ve made the choice to keep going in child care even after high school.”
We invite schools to learn more about the CDA Pathway to Purpose program. Limited scholarships are available for students interested in the program for the next school year, 2025-2026. Those ready to move forward can complete a form to receive further guidance on the next steps.
